Installing

A few notes before you start.

On Windows

Wit's installer isn't signed with a certificate, so the first time you run it Windows may show "Windows protected your PC". Click More info, then Run anyway. The installer is the same file you downloaded from GitHub; the warning only means Windows has not seen it before.

If your PC is missing Microsoft's WebView2 component, the installer fetches it for you.

On a Mac

Open the .dmg and drag Wit into Applications. The first time, right-click Wit and choose Open, then confirm. After that it opens like any other app.

On Linux

Make the AppImage runnable, then open it. Or install the package with your package manager:

  • chmod +x Wit_0.1.1_amd64.AppImage
  • sudo apt install ./Wit_0.1.1_amd64.deb
  • sudo dnf install ./Wit-0.1.1-1.x86_64.rpm

The packages are built on Ubuntu 22.04, so they run on it and on anything newer.

The first time you open it

Look around, then start your own.

Wit opens with sample documents so you can see how a book and a script look before you write a word. Press Alt+N (⌥N on a Mac) to start a new book, essay, screenplay or stage play. Wit makes a folder for it, with the text file and its settings inside.

Press Ctrl+Shift+P (⇧⌘P on a Mac) at any time to find any command by typing part of its name. Alt+? shows every keyboard shortcut.

The command palette open over a manuscript, listing commands with their shortcuts

One question

What are you writing?

A novel, a picture book, a screenplay, a thesis? Knowing what people bring to Wit helps decide what to work on next. One line is plenty.
