About

Why Wit exists.

Wit is made by Cosmin Stefaniga. It began as the tool he wanted for his own books: a calm place to write, and a way to see the finished pages without leaving the manuscript.

A calm place to write.

Most of a book is written in long, quiet stretches. Wit is built for those: one column of text, a comfortable typeface, and nothing else on the screen until you ask for it. The tools are there, behind a keystroke, and they go away again when you are done with them.

Books that end up in print.

A manuscript is not a book until it is on a page. Wit lays your text out as real pages while you write, with the sizes, margins and typefaces that printers expect, and exports a PDF you can send to a printer or a print-on-demand service. The writing and the book stay in one place.

Your files stay yours.

Everything you write in Wit is plain text in folders you choose: Markdown for books and essays, Fountain for scripts, with a small settings file beside it. You can open those files in any other program, today or in twenty years. Wit needs no account and sends nothing over the internet.

Free and open source.

Wit's source code is public on GitHub, and the app is free to download and use. Read the code, report a problem, or help make it better.

Try it on your own manuscript.

Free for Windows, macOS and Linux.
